Literacy Claim

 

1. Present your position on literacy, explaining what you believe about it, drawing from the readings that have influenced your thinking the most. That means you will make a claim about literacy and support that claim with sources. I would anticipate a minimum of 4 sources from our readings, including those involved in the Gee article on "Orality and Literacy" (i.e., Brice-Heath, Havelock, Street, etc). to provide some basis for your position. 

Claim: 

Literacy is simply the ability to read, write, speak, and learn; it refers to someone’s ability to learn, pertaining to many different subjects.

Overall, literacy and the way it is present in society, the wya in which people read write speak… changes. This is due to the ongoing presence of technology and its inventions. As we introduce more elements, tools, and comments to the world, we have to evolve to create new and accurate vocabulary to describe the new phenomenon. Literacy is non-monolithic. 

Evolution of Literacy Beliefs

 

1. How have beliefs about literacy changed over time? What did people used to believe about literacy and how has that changed? What do scholars believe today? 

• An old belief in literacy: “funner” not a word…described as incorrect 
• There was an old English language standard and it was considered an achievement or an academic achievement to follow communication, and grammar guidelines. 
• Literacy changes, because now… we don’t stick to those same proper English standard guidelines. 
• This doesn’t reflect how smart or literate someone is if they say “funner” we now adjust and make it a vocabulary word. Same with adjusting to other literacy such as texting, and brief one sentence response without proper sentence structure. Literacy has morphed due to technology. 

• Scholars today, per ezpeince, use casual language all the time in proesffintal communications. “Word” “sweet.” “Sick” 
• Maybe they even forget a period or don’t utilize correct email structure 

Introduction

Literacy is simply the ability to read, write, and speak; it refers to someone’s ability to learn pertaining towards all different sources of information. The purpose of this blog is to create a resource that people can utilize to learn about literacy and its monolithic definition.
